There are three structures namely Structure I: Fully Research (Thesis), Structure II: Coursework and Research (Dissertation) and Structure III: Fully Coursework (Project Paper)

What are the entry qualifications to the postgraduate programmes?

Do I need to submit a research proposal together with my postgraduate application?
Not necessary. After you have registered with us, we shall assist you in preparing the research proposal through a series of Research Methodology workshops.
If I am in the final year of my Bachelor’s Degree programme, can I apply to pursue AeU postgraduate programme?
You are allowed to apply but the offer is subjected to completing your study successfully.
What is the Open Entry Qualification (OEQ)?
Open Entry refers to non-restrictive entry requirements that are applicable for students with working experience that can be assessed and matched with courses’ learning outcomes. It allows prospective students a second chance at higher education as prior learning experience is acknowledged as valuable learning and used to compensate for paper qualifications. To be considered for Open Entry you must meet the following requirements:
Can I transfer my credits from Bachelor’s Degree programme to Master’s level?
No. AeU will only consider credits to be transferred at the same level of study (e.g. Master to Master)
How do I qualify to apply for credit transfer?
The credit transfer will be considered if the subjects are similar to the subjects offered in programmes offered by AeU. However, the approval is subject to the respective Dean of School's confirmation.
When do I apply for credit transfer?
For new students, application must be made within the first semester. The application must be accompanied by the transcript of examination results and the syllabus of the subjects.
Is there any implication of fee for the credit transfer given?
Students will be charged RM50.00 per transferred credit.
Is there any maximum limit of the total number of credits transferred?
The maximum transferable credit is 30% of the credit hours required for graduation in a University programme.
How do I apply for a change of programme after registration?
A student can apply to change a programme no later than the second week after the semester commences and a payment of RM50.00 (USD15) is required for each application.
Is there any possibility for me to convert from Master’s to Doctoral Degree Programme?
A student under Structure 1 may apply for conversion from Master to a Doctoral Degree programme. The application must be made with the recommendations of the supervisor(s). The student has to complete at least 3 semesters, and has shown outstanding research work that merits the conversion.
How do I defer my study?
A registered student may apply for a study deferment any time before the final examination week. Each application is for one semester of deferment. An activation fee of RM50 (USD15) will be charged for each deferred semester upon registration of new semester.
How is the grading system for postgraduate programme?
For coursework, the general passing grade in all subjects is a B and above. The student needs to maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.00 in order to graduate. Research work is graded either Satisfactory ‘S’ or Unsatisfactory ‘U’. No point value is given to the research work.
How to improve my grades?
You are allowed to improve your grade by repeating the subject in the programme of your study. For CGPA calculation, the better grade will be counted.
What should I do if I want to add or drop subject(s)?
You can apply to add or drop subjects by submitting the application via online through the student portal to the Dean of respective school for approval at the stipulated timeframe.
How do I qualify for graduation?
The Senate shall confer a Master or Doctoral degree to a student upon recommendation by the University Examination Board once all the requirements for graduation have been fulfilled.
When a supervisor is assigned to me?
For research students, it is advisable to have a supervisor as soon as possible. You can identify your supervisor(s) for AeU by appointing them using Form SGS S001. Until your substantive supervisor has been nominated, the Dean of your School shall be your academic advisor.
How do I nominate my supervisor(s)?
You can discuss with your potential supervisor(s) and seek their agreement. You can send the nomination form together with their CV to the Dean of the respective School at a later stage. However, AeU Senate shall give the final approval.
How frequent do I need to be in contact with my supervisor?
As frequently as you can but you are advised to have at least 3 meetings per semester. You can discuss either face to face or via online or other modes of communications. Please make the necessary appointments prior to the actual meetings. Record all meetings and have them signed by both of you.
What shall I do if I have a strained relationship with my supervisor(s)?
It is better for you to have a ‘heart to heart’ discussion first with your current supervisor(s). However, if an amicable solution is not possible, you may apply to change your supervisor.
Where does the expertise come from?
The experts of various field of studies may be internally available at AeU or come from other higher learning institutions or from the industry, locally as well as internationally. We have an unlimited pool of expertise to support the postgraduate programmes.
Is there any implication to my research if I change my supervisor?
The implication will depend on the stage of your research work. However, you have to discuss with your new supervisor(s) on the progress of your research based on the feedback from previous supervisor(s).
Can I nominate a foreigner whom I believe have the expertise on the area of my research?
Yes. The procedures of nomination are similar to the appointment of local supervisor(s). However, if there is any additional cost incurred on the supervision, you may have to bear the cost.
What are the fields of research offered at AeU?
Currently, the specialisations at AeU include areas in Business Administration, Education and ICT. More areas of specializations shall be expanded from time to time.
Am I able to embark on a research area other than the ones listed?
Yes. We shall assist you to find a suitable supervisor(s) to guide in your research work.
If I have done some initial work for my research at previous institution, can I transfer it to AeU?
You are allowed to proceed your work subjected it be accepted during the proposal defense.
Can I maintain my supervisor(s) from my previous institution to complete my research?
Yes, provided the supervisor(s) agree. However, the AeU Senate has the final decision.
Are there any guidelines for the writing of thesis and dissertation?
The guidelines for thesis and dissertation writing are available at the AeU Student Portal (under Forms and Guidelines).
Can I write my thesis in other languages besides English?
Yes, besides English, you are allowed to write in Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin and Arabic. However, the language used is subjected to the approval of your supervisor(s) and Dean of the respective School.
What is a viva voce?
A viva voce refers to an oral examination taken at the end of a Master or Doctoral research degree programme. It is used to test the ability of the student to present orally his/her knowledge of the subject-matter being examined in the thesis or dissertation examination.
When should I sit for the viva?
The viva voce will be conducted when all the examiners’ reports of your final thesis or dissertation have been received.
Who are the members of the Examination Committee?
The Committee for Master’s Degree shall comprise of the Dean of School of Graduate Studies (SGS) or representative, one Internal Examiner and one External Examiner. The Committee for Doctoral degree shall comprise of the Dean or representative, one Internal Examiner and two External Examiners.
Is my supervisor allowed to participate in the decision-making during viva voce?
No, your supervisor will only provide the examiners with any assistance they require but will not take an active part in the viva voce.

What if I don’t make the deadline of submission?
You have to apply to the Dean of School of Graduate Studies for a time extension. The Dean may, at his discretion, extend the time up to 60 days. However, only one extension is granted to you.

If I am not satisfied with the examination result, can I appeal?
Yes, you have to fill in the ‘Appeal on Examination Grade’ Form and the application must be made to the Assessment Department within 21 days of the announcement of the final examination results. A payment of RM50 (USD15) is required for each application.

EPF withdrawal
How can I withdraw from my EPF account to pay the tuition fee?
Students have to inform Admission and Records Department the withdrawal amount and request for the Confirmation Letter issuance.
How long does the withdrawal application takes?
Normally, the complete application may take up to 2 to 4 weeks to be processed before the payment is released to the University.
Who is qualified for the senior citizen incentive?
All Malaysian students who are 55 years old and above on the registration date are eligible for the incentive.
If I am 54 years old and 7 months during the date of registration, am I eligible for the senior citizen incentive?
No, you are only eligible for the following semesters onwards.
